Another prolific painter in our workshops on Abstract Expressionism, Mark Rothko’s epic paintings aimed to bring art up to the same moving level as music. His paintings were often huge murals, intended to envelop their observers in the experience, creating an interaction between the viewer and the painting, a conversation of souls. Often described as ‘colour-field paintings’, Rothko’s works were designed to be a sensory experience where simple colours in indeterminate shapes were layered in such a way that they wash over the viewer, calling to them on a visceral or spiritual level.

Now you can learn the techniques and tricks Rothko used to create his masterpieces and, with our step-by-step instructions and supportive tutors, you can use them to make masterpieces of your own.

In this class, we will look at paint thinning, applying colour washes to the canvas and how to create the effect of movement in space through the layering of washes to create shapes. Our instructor Cal will help you to discover the intuitive and emotional process of Abstract Expression, so you too can learn how to create art that speaks to you.

What We Offer

This is a 90 minute class led by one of our in-house artists, Cal Chapman, who specialises in Abstract Art and Abstract Expressionism. After a quick introduction into Mark Rothko and his works, Cal will demo how Rothko would create his paintings through:

• Thinning out paints to create washes
• Setting a base layer wash
• Layering shapes
• Creating movement and depth through stacking

After that, it will be your turn to have a go at one of the most fun ways of painting around. Cal will be on hand to guide you through the process with any questions or queries you may have, and to provide tips on texture, colour and composition when creating your artworks. We will provide canvases, brushes and all the paints you could need, and you will walk away with your very own take on a Rothko painting.
