stories about the history of tea
Tea is 5,000 years old and was first discovered by a Chinese emperor. During the Ming Dynasty the Chinese started to blend their teas to experiment with new flavours. Our blends will include rose, jasmine and fig flavours. Marie Antoinette, who was known for her extravagant gowns and tea drinking habit, also grew flowers in her garden. She used these flowers to boost the flavor of her cup of tea.
Thanks to tea being drunk in ladies boudoirs, corsets fell out of favour to be welcomed by loose tea gown robes. These tea gowns looked quite provocative and later developed a naughty connotation. Tea time became an excuse for a woman to entertain her lover.
Famous women in history influenced the fashion of afternoon tea. Queen Victoria established afternoon tea and it became a fashionable event where affluent women would dress up in glamourous gowns. Later on tango music was played during tea time, which meant dresses became shorter. Jane Austen, another indulgent tea drinker, also writes about English tea culture in her novels.
